Saline County
Of the September term of the Saline County Circuit Court in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty two.  The Grand Jurors chosen selected and sworn in and for the County of Saline in the name and by the authority of the People of the State of Illinois, upon their oaths present that John Patterson, mary A. Stone and Mary Patterson late of the county of Saline and State of Illinois, on the first day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty two at and within the county aforesaid, in the state of Illinois with force and arms in the county aforesaid in and upon one infant child born of said Mary Patterson and __________ named Patterson the sex and given name of said infant child being to the grand jurors unknown and said child being alive and of tender age to wit:  of the age of two days, feloniously willfully and of their malice aforethought did make and assault and that the said John Patterson, Mary A. Stone and Mary Patterson the said infant child so born and being alive as aforesaid did then and there feloniously willfully and of their malice aforethought wholly neglect and refuse to nourish sustain and provide for said infant child by reason of which said refusal and neglect of the said John Patterson, Mary A. Stone and Mary Patterson to nourish sustain and provide for the said infant child the said infant child then and there instantly died so the grand jurors aforesaid upon their oaths aforesaid do say that the said John Patterson, Mary A. Stone and Mary Patterson the said infant child in a manner and form aforesaid did kill and murder, contrary to the form of the statute in such case made and provided and against the peace and dignity of the same People of the State of Illinois.  (A further detailed description of the neglect is in the record)
